Is your makeup base not turning out the way you want? Have you just started applying makeup? Or do you feel like you don't have the right products yet? Then read our tips on how to apply your foundation to achieve an even complexion and a
perfect finish!
Foundation – The Basics
What the cosmetics world calls "foundation," we in Germany often mistakenly call "makeup." The latter is the umbrella term for all decorative products, while the translation of the former term perfectly summarizes its purpose. It is a
base or primer.
It can conceal imperfections, even out your skin tone, and give your skin a
smooth look. Foundation is applied to both the face and neck. Therefore, it is important to find a variant that suits you exactly. We will give you tips on the actual application
later. For
covering pimples, we even created a separate post. First, let's take a look at the different types here.
Liquid, Solid, or Creamy: Which Foundation to Apply?
Foundation comes in many
forms and colors. Keeping track of them all and not having to try every variant is not easy, especially for makeup beginners. Therefore, we will introduce you to your options in more detail and then show you how to get a little closer to the ideal product for your
skin type.
The Classic: Liquid Foundation
Liquid foundation is one of the
light versions of its kind. Thanks to its light consistency, it provides a fresh and natural look with a comfortable feel. You can find it in various shades and with light to heavy coverage. In combination with the right application technique, you can create the impression that you are completely bare-faced.
Who can apply this type of foundation? This product is excellent for normal to
dry skin. But don't worry. If you tend to have
oily skin, you can also use it. However, be sure to choose a
matte finish. This will reduce unwanted shine.
For a Weightless Feel: Mousse
A liquid foundation feels good, but doesn't achieve the desired effect? Then a mousse might be just what you need. As the name suggests, it is a delicate, rather
foamy product, usually packaged in small jars.
Although its consistency is still quite light, the coverage is already a little
stronger than that of the liquid version. You can apply this foundation if your focus is more on concealing minor imperfections and you have normal to combination skin.
Perfect for On-the-Go: The Foundation Stick
Are you often out and about or generally have little time for your makeup or to apply your foundation? Then the
to-go variant might be the object of your desire. With the so-called foundation stick, your base is ready in no time. You can imagine it like a slightly oversized lipstick.
The product is simply twisted out, applied to the face in strips, and then blended with a tool of your choice. Due to its creamy consistency and
medium to strong coverage, it is particularly suitable for dry to combination skin and for concealing stronger imperfections.
Flat and Compact: Powder Foundation
Although one would expect the opposite with a powdery consistency, you should apply precisely this type of foundation if you want
strong coverage. Because these variants are actually particularly thick. Therefore, we also advise using them only in moderation. Otherwise, the look can quickly appear mask-like.
So apply this product when you want to hide stronger imperfections. The slightly creamy options are excellent for dry skin, as they provide some
moisture, while for oily skin, you are better off working with a pure compact powder.
Two Alternatives to Foundation: Mineral Powder and Tinted Day Cream
If your goal is not to cover imperfections, but rather to create a slightly more
even complexion, you have two alternatives. You don't always have to apply foundation. Especially not when you're in a hurry or just want to add a little freshness to your face.
The first option is a mineral powder. This is based exclusively on minerals and therefore generally does not clog your pores or cause allergies. Depending on the pigment content, this provides light to strong coverage. It is suitable
for all skin types, but especially for oily or sensitive combination skin.
The second alternative to foundation is a
BB Cream, also known as tinted day cream. The abbreviation stands for "
blemish-balm". So you can also cover imperfections with it, but still maintain a natural look. It only loses a little coverage. Due to its light, creamy consistency, you can apply it to your face very quickly and thus combine skincare and make-up. It is also suitable for all skin types, but especially for dry and sensitive skin.
Summary: Applying Foundation According to Skin Type
To keep track of the abundance of different options, we have summarized the most important points for you here. Keep in mind that these are only
guidelines that you can follow. After applying foundation, pay particular attention to how the product behaves on your skin. Does it stay in place? Does it feel comfortable? If not, try something new.
| Skin Type |
Foundation |
| Dry Skin |
It should provide moisture, so avoid powders. These are difficult to apply to dry areas. Therefore, opt for a liquid product that ideally contains moisturizing active ingredients. |
| Oily Skin |
To avoid further promoting unwanted shine, you should preferably use powder foundations for this skin type. These provide a matte complexion. |
| Combination Skin |
To meet the needs of both your oilier areas around the nose and forehead and the dry skin on the rest of your face, we recommend a combination of liquid and solid foundation. Distribute the former, leaving out the T-zone. Once everything has absorbed, cover your nose and forehead with powder. Alternatively, you can take a middle ground and opt for a mousse. |

The Correct Application Technique
To apply your foundation, you need not only the correct product but also the
right tools. Here too, you have various options to choose from. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. If you are not comfortable with one tool, try something else. Because only when both cosmetics and technique are right will you achieve that even look.

Applying Foundation: Achieving a Smooth Complexion in a Few Steps
Once you have your product and tools ready, you can now apply your foundation. Follow the
general steps and refer to the overview above for the exact technique.
-
Preparation is key: First, you need to clean your face and thoroughly remove dirt, sebum, and dead skin particles. The cleaner the surface, the more streak-free the application.
-
Care for your skin: Use a primer and, for normal and dry skin, also apply a moisturizing face cream. Allow the products about 10–15 minutes to absorb.
- Grab your foundation and your tool. Apply it using the appropriate technique. Take some time for this and blend it thoroughly so that no unsightly edges appear. Also, don't forget to transfer some to your neck to create a soft, smooth transition.
-
Set your work: For this, you can use transparent powder, for example. Afterwards, you can continue with your other cosmetics such as concealer, blush, etc. At the very end, we recommend using a setting spray.
Here are a few final tips:
- If you have used too much product, you don't have to remove it and start over. Instead, grab a brush and continue to work the foundation in.
- Always pay attention to the direction your hairs grow and distribute the product in the direction of growth.
- Don't forget to regularly clean your brushes and sponges. Otherwise, they can collect bacteria, which can lead to skin impurities.
- Try a mixture of foundation and primer. Many beauticians swear by it.
Be gentle with your face and apply not too much pressure, even when dabbing. If you apply your product with your fingers, we recommend using your ring finger.
