Do you want to cover up your pimples? Sometimes, those red blemishes just won't disappear, no matter how much cream and care you apply. We'll share our tips on how to still present your best self with the right makeup in such moments. Read more here!

Before covering pimples: understanding the skin's blemishes

Pimples can have very different causes. In puberty, depending on your skin type, they are often hormonally induced, but they can also be triggered by polluted air or an incorrect skincare routine.

Even a genetic predisposition plays a role – some people are simply more prone to such breakouts. Not sure what the reason is for you? Then check out our article on skin impurities.

However, it is certain that most people always want to present themselves in the best light. A clear complexion often leads to more self-confidence. Therefore, in the long run, it is also sensible to address pimples and effectively combat them. Various home remedies like tea tree oil, honey, and chamomile can already help with this.

Unfortunately, these are not instant solutions to get rid of pimples. Instead, this is a longer process that, while rewarding, probably won't provide immediate relief. That's why we'll show you below how to cover up redness.

Covering pimples – but with what?

Do you regularly experience pimple breakouts? Then you should always have some makeup tools at hand to make them visually disappear.

In a nutshell:

  • use mattifying, oil-free foundation
  • use cover-up sticks for high coverage
  • choose light green color correcting products

First and foremost, and probably already on your shelf: foundation. When applied correctly, it provides an even complexion. If you specifically want to cover redness, we recommend a mattifying, oil-free, and non-comedogenic product. That is, a product that does not promote the development of skin impurities like blackheads (scientifically comedones). This can also absorb excess sebum and thus tackle the problem at its root.

Also on your shopping list should be a concealer stick. Unlike foundation, it offers higher coverage. This makes it particularly suitable for covering pimples. Here, too, there are now specific products on the market for impure skin. These are enriched with anti-inflammatory salicylic acid.

Finally, don't forget your concealer. Special color correcting products are specifically tailored to your problem areas. For covering pimples (as well as other redness), a pastel green tone helps. We'll explain exactly how to apply it and how to apply makeup to your already irritated skin now!

How to successfully cover pimples

Covering pimples requires several steps. You should always carry these out in a way that does not irritate your skin further and clog pores. Otherwise, this would only worsen the problem. Instead, thorough cleansing before application and careful makeup removal in the evening are essential. We'll tell you exactly how!

1. Cleanse

The danger of covering pimples is basically that pores can become clogged. These, in turn, worsen inflammation and cause redness to intensify and skin impurities to spread. To prevent this, you should thoroughly cleanse your face before applying makeup.

The 10 Steps Korean Skincare Routine takes a unique approach. The skin is not just cleansed once, but twice. First, you use a soothing cleansing oil, and then follow up with a gentle cleanser. Ideally, you then treat the irritated areas individually. For this, a toner is recommended, but also essences and serums.

2. Prime

Impure skin often looks a bit patchy. This is because fresh pimples, older marks, and clear skin often meet here. To create an even look, you need foundation. When choosing, consider the tips above and opt for a product that matches your skin tone as closely as possible.

Then apply the primer thinly. Attention! Even if it may be tempting and the "more is more" principle runs through your mind – the opposite is true here. Because too much foundation would only emphasize the pimples instead of covering them. If they still show through slightly, that's not a problem, because the following steps are for that.

By the way: Do you want to do without foundation? Then you can also use a tinted facial cream. Alternatively, you can now find various creams or even primers on the market that have color-correcting properties.

3. Conceal

Now your other two tools come into play: concealer and cover-up stick. Both are there to precisely cover the pimples that are still showing through. First, neutralize the redness with a slightly greenish shimmering makeup. It's best to gently dab it on with a sponge or a brush. Then blend it so that it seamlessly integrates into your skin. Afterwards, you can use a cover-up stick to balance things out and gently blend all contours.

Next, it's time to make it last. After all, you surely don't want the redness to reappear halfway through the day. To prevent this, you need a powder. This sets your makeup, evens out your complexion, and can also absorb excess sebum. Simply apply gently, et voilà! But beware: especially if you want to cover acne, it's better not to use a matte product, as it will emphasize unevenness even more.

Can you cover open pimples?

Covering pimples becomes more difficult if you have accidentally injured the affected area. This is because there is a high risk of bacteria and harmful substances entering the wound and worsening the inflammation. Nevertheless, you can effectively hide these impurities with a few tricks.

The be-all and end-all is to treat the wound beforehand. Clean it with some water and then disinfect it. Afterwards, apply a Pimple Patch. This seals the area and protects it from further influences. It is also specially coated to stimulate the skin's self-regeneration. You can then continue as usual – the small "plaster" fits smoothly on your face.

Caution! Mistakes when covering pimples

Have you read the article this far, but still have a quiet voice in your head whispering that you shouldn't cover pimples? This was a common assumption for a long time, and not without reason. After all, we have already mentioned that incorrect makeup application usually causes more harm.

Clogged pores lead to the spread of impurities. It is therefore important that you avoid the following mistakes:

  • Not enough time: If a pimple is inflamed or even open, you should give it time to heal. This primarily means leaving it alone. Makeup is the opposite of that and should only be used in conjunction with a pimple patch.
  • No preparation: Don't forget to cleanse and care for your skin thoroughly before applying makeup and after removing it!
  • Worn-out tools: Did you know that makeup sponges, brushes, etc., should be cleaned regularly? Because bacteria and remnants of your old makeup collect in them. So clean them (preferably antibacterially) before using them to cover pimples.
