Are you wondering which oil is really suitable for hair? Natural essences are true all-rounders in hair care. Whether you're struggling with brittle ends, unruly curls, or a dry scalp – the right product can achieve visible results. But which one is right for your hair? In this guide, you'll learn what to look out for and how to use it correctly. Read on now!

Why you should know which oil is ideal for hair

Many natural oils are rich in vitamin E and other nutrients that intensively nourish dry hair. Coconut oil, in particular, penetrates deep into the fibers thanks to its molecular structure, repairs damage, and helps prevent protein loss. Some varieties (e.g., jojoba and argan oil) also form a protective layer that counteracts environmental damage and heat exposure – this can be particularly helpful with intensive styling.

Another benefit is the smoothing of the cuticle. When it's less roughened, the hair reflects more light and appears shinier. Jojoba or almond oil are particularly suitable for this, as they are light and do not weigh down the fibers, but at the same time provide shine and smoothness.

Regular use of hair care keeps your hair supple and flexible, which reduces the tendency for breakage and split ends. Oils penetrate the ends and can fill small cracks before split ends form. Coconut oil, in particular, is known for its repairing properties, as it strengthens the hair structure from within.

Benefits at a glance:

  • Moisturizing: Especially important for dry or damaged hair.
  • Heat protection: Ideal before blow-drying or straightening.
  • Shine enhancer: For healthy, natural shine.
  • Split end prevention: Helps keep hair ends supple.

How to use hair oil

The application of natural oils can take your hair to the next level – but only if you use them correctly. For fine hair, you should only sparingly work it into the ends to preserve volume without weighing it down. For curly hair, it's best to massage the product into slightly damp hair to tame frizz and define the curl structure. Do you suffer from a dry scalp? Then apply the liquid directly to the scalp and gently massage it in to reduce dandruff and stimulate blood circulation. We'll now explain these and other methods to fully utilize the benefits in more detail.

1. Application before shampooing

If your hair is dry and damaged, an oil treatment before washing can make a big difference. Apply the product generously to the lengths and ends, then wrap everything in a towel or shower cap. The warmth can help the nutrients penetrate the hair structure better. The longer you leave the treatment on, the more intensive the care – half an hour is the minimum, overnight gives the oil time to penetrate deep into the fibers and repair brittle areas.

This pre-wash method is ideal for protecting your hair from drying out during washing, especially with highly cleansing shampoos. With regular use, a protective layer builds up that makes your hair more resistant to environmental influences and styling heat. You might be wondering which oil is best for hair in this case? Actually, any – since it's washed out with this method, you can use heavier varieties like olive or coconut oil without concern.

2. Application after shampooing

After washing, your hair is particularly receptive to care, as the cuticle of the fibers is slightly opened by the warmth of the water. Now, a small amount of oil is enough, which you should ideally work into the still slightly damp lengths and ends. This locks in moisture and keeps the hair supple for longer. Make sure to use it sparingly – a few drops are enough to tame frizz and enhance shine without making your hairstyle look greasy.

For this method, light oils like jojoba or argan are suitable, as they are quickly absorbed and do not weigh down the hair. This type of application is ideal for keeping your hair soft in everyday life and at the same time protecting it from styling heat or mechanical damage. This technique is particularly optimal for people with straight or fine hair, as it maintains more volume compared to using it before showering.

3. Scalp care with hair oil

Not only the hair but also the scalp benefits from the nourishing properties of certain care products. An oil massage can help stimulate blood circulation, which in turn can promote hair growth. At the same time, essences like tea tree or rosemary oil moisturize the scalp and have antibacterial properties, which is particularly helpful for dryness and/or dandruff. Apply the product directly to the partings and gently massage it in – this can contribute to relaxation.

Leave the oil on for at least 20 minutes before rinsing it thoroughly. You can also leave it on overnight if you need more intensive care. This method is particularly helpful for scalp problems such as dandruff or itching. Some extracts, like tea tree oil, also help reduce inflammation and regulate sebum production, which in turn keeps oily roots under control.

4. As a finish for everyday use

A drop of oil can work wonders in everyday life to tame flyaways and refresh your hairstyle. To do this, dispense a tiny amount into your palms and gently smooth it over the surface of your hair. This helps prevent static electricity and provides shine. Especially for dry or frizzy hair, this is a simple trick to instantly reduce frizz.

Here it is important which oil you use for your hair: Only use light essences such as jojoba or grapeseed oil. Especially in winter, when hair is often drier due to heating air, or in summer, when sun and chlorine stress it, a drop can make all the difference. However, make sure to use it sparingly so that nothing looks greasy.

DIY Recipe: Make your own hair oil

Have you not yet found which oil for hair suits your care routine? With a few simple ingredients, you can create your own hair oil that is perfectly tailored to your hair type. The best part: you know exactly what's in it and can use high-quality, natural essences. Here's a recipe from us for inspiration.

Ingredients:

  • 125 ml grapeseed oil
  • 10 drops lavender oil

Instructions:

  1. Mix the two oils.
  2. Warm the mixture slightly and apply it to your scalp.
  3. Wrap your head in a warm towel and wear it for 1–2 hours.
  4. Afterward, wash your hair with a gentle shampoo.

This recipe is pure self-care. Both oils work purposefully: Lavender has antimicrobial properties that can soothe the scalp and promote hair growth. Grapeseed also helps with the latter – in addition, it stimulates blood circulation. Treat yourself to this mixture and do your scalp some good!
