People are raving about them from all sides: sheet masks. But what can these quirky pieces of fabric actually do? Why are they supposed to be so much better than other face masks? And what should you consider when using them? We took a closer look at this
cosmetic trend. Find out everything about sheet masks here!
What exactly are sheet masks?
Admittedly, you do look a bit like something from another planet when you wear them. But most users simply love sheet masks anyway. The
trend originally comes from Asia, more precisely from Korea and Japan, where this special type of facial care has long been standard.
Behind these beauty items, also known as sheet masks or
fleece masks, are soft pieces of fabric in the shape of a face, soaked in a highly effective serum. The fabric masks are then placed on the face, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate the skin. By the way, there is a variant for almost all skin types.
What are the masks made of?
The basis for all sheet masks is primarily the fabrics used. There are clear advantages as well as disadvantages to the
various materials. We would like to give you a brief overview here:
-
Non-woven fabric: These porous fabric sheets are made from separated fibers. They feel similar to paper and are somewhat rough. This can irritate very sensitive skin. These sheets are also less flexible and dry out relatively quickly. However, they are very inexpensive. Ideal for trying out.
-
Cotton: The natural fibers give the cloth a significantly finer texture. However, this variant is still not very flexible and therefore does not adapt perfectly to the shape of the face. On the other hand, the material dries out less quickly and thus provides a little more care.
-
Bio-cellulose: This material is obtained, for example, from coconuts and consists of woven microbial cellulose. It is easy to move, adheres well to the skin, and does not dry out. These good properties come at a price.
-
Hydrogel: The Ferrari of sheet masks. It consists of a mixture of cosmetic serums with gelatin, so it is not a fabric but a gel. This makes it more powerful, flexible, and prevents it from drying out. Unfortunately, it tears easily. These masks are relatively expensive. In addition, some hydrogels can irritate sensitive skin.
These active ingredients belong (or don't belong) in sheet masks
For sheet masks to truly deliver the results they claim – sometimes even after the first application – the
ingredients are crucial. However, you need to look closely here. Not every sheet mask on the market is truly nourishing. Some products, for example, contain silicones, parabens, or alcohol. Various fragrances are also sometimes included. All of these can irritate or even damage. So make sure that such substances have not been used.
Conversely, nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid – the secret weapon for moisture – or coenzyme Q10 are welcome. Mild fruit acids, various plant extracts, and various antioxidants are also welcome components in the care masks. Many also work with vitamins (e.g., vitamin E) and minerals (e.g., zinc), which can also have a
beneficial effect on the skin.
What types of sheet masks are there?
From skin impurities to fighting the first wrinkles – there are many reasons to take care of your skin. Sheet masks are
very helpful tools, as there are models for very different target groups. We would like to briefly introduce you to the most common types here:
-
Moisturizers. These masks are ideal for dry, stressed skin. They contain a lot of moisture, which they bring into the skin, making it smoother and suppler.
-
Nourishing Sheet Masks. These are the nourishing variants and are rich in valuable nutrients (e.g., omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, etc.). They soothe the skin and simultaneously stimulate regeneration. Skin redness, but also impurities, can be combated with this type.
-
Anti-aging masks. These can specifically reduce visible signs of skin aging. Environmentally caused skin damage can also be regenerated with them. The masks work with active ingredients such as collagen or elastin and thus also mitigate the first wrinkles.
Miracle cure or smoke and mirrors: advantages and disadvantages of sheet masks
As always when something is new, there are enthusiastic fans and critical skeptics. To help you form your own opinion, we want to briefly present both sides here. Because yes: the sheet mask has advantages, but unfortunately, it is not perfect either!
Advantages of Sheet Masks
Not everyone likes to spend hours in the bathroom. Some lack the time, others lack the patience to painstakingly apply creams to their face, let them soak in, and then have to wash them off thoroughly. Sheet masks are perfect for these people. Because here, the
application is wonderfully simple and quick. Even beauty grumps will enjoy them. In addition, nothing drips or crumbles during the application time.
Another advantage is that the fabric sheets on the skin increase the efficiency of the serum. This is because warmth is generated under them, which in turn
opens the pores of the skin and allows the beneficial ingredients to be absorbed better. Furthermore, the contained moisture cannot evaporate unhindered. This is often the case with normal facial masks, which is why the active ingredients cannot fully penetrate the skin, but literally evaporate.
Another positive aspect of sheet masks is that they are ideal for on the go or in between. The small packages are even allowed in your hand luggage on a plane and can quickly refresh your skin in a hotel room. In addition, these little helpers are ideal for those who don't want or can't afford expensive skincare products regularly. In many stores, they are now available for little money, so a
small pampering moment is always available if you want it.
What are the disadvantages?
As we just said: Sheet masks are actually a fairly inexpensive product. However, with regular use of higher-quality variants, the
costs can quickly add up. Above a certain frequency, a conventional face mask could financially at least be more worthwhile.
Furthermore, a very important point is the
waste generated. Since each sheet mask is individually packaged and not reusable, a lot of waste accumulates over time. So, here too, it's a matter of weighing things up. However, there are now alternatives where the masks come in a kind of dispenser, which reduces the amount of waste a little.
And finally, the actually simple application is unfortunately not quite so straightforward. The most common problems probably concern the size of the masks. These are
one-size, so they don't fit every face shape perfectly. They can therefore slip or sometimes not adhere well. In addition, the application time must be observed exactly. Otherwise, the fabrics may start to draw moisture that has just been painstakingly applied to the skin back out again. And finally, the mask cannot be tested beforehand in an inconspicuous place to see whether it causes allergies or irritation. Otherwise, it would lose its effectiveness during the waiting time for a reaction. Here it's all or nothing.
How to apply it correctly?
Whether as a regular part of your skincare routine or to simply treat your skin, the correct application of a sheet mask is crucial. That's why we want to give you
a few tips on this.
- Cleanse your skin thoroughly beforehand. Only then can the active ingredients penetrate unhindered. You can even use a peeling beforehand. A toner afterwards rebalances the skin.
- Remove the mask from the packaging (peel off all foils!) and carefully place it on your face. Adjust the fabric if necessary so that the holes for your mouth, eyes and nose are well positioned, and then press it firmly everywhere.
- Let the magic happen. Lean back, relax and let the active ingredients soak in for a sufficient amount of time. It's best to follow the package insert here. Most masks take between 15-25 minutes to work.
- Then carefully remove the mask. If there are still remnants of the serum on your skin, you can gently massage them in. Any remaining serum from the packaging can also be applied to your neck, nape and décolleté.
- If you like, you can now apply a moisturizer to lock in the nutrients in the skin. But you don't have to. What you definitely shouldn't do: wash your face now! If your skin feels unpleasantly sticky, the mask wasn't the right one for you. Try a different composition next time.
And your skin will glow. This procedure usually takes no longer than 30 minutes in total. Of course, you can also do other things at the same time if you have a full to-do list. For a lasting effect,
regular use is recommended – 1 to 2 times a week would be ideal. Lighter textures are suitable for morning care as they absorb faster. Richer masks, on the other hand, can be applied in the evening. This way, the skin can process the care in peace overnight.
