As a fan of cosmetics, you surely know that a beautifully made-up mouth sometimes completes the entire make-up look. Gloss almost always works, but for some looks, you just have to apply lipstick. However, this can be more difficult. Here you will learn how to achieve the perfect result and why trendy Korean products might offer the perfect intermediate solution!

Before the actual application: finding the right color and preparing your lips

Of course, you can always apply lipstick directly, meaning straight onto your mouth, without any preliminary work. However, it often won't last as well as you probably wish. Randomly choosing a color can also make your make-up look inconsistent. So, it's important to first find a shade that suits your complexion and then properly prepare your lips for the product.

From warm to cool and light to dark: the right lipstick color according to skin type

The basis for applying lipstick is, of course, a color that matches your skin tone, your hair, or even your lip shape. Even with unusual shades like blue or purple, you should pay close attention to the different nuances. We recommend you follow these guidelines:
Skin Tone Recommendation
Fair Skin: often freckles, eyes usually blue/green, burns easily in the sun
  • Cool: Coral, red, or pink with a bluish tint
  • Warm: Warm orange or nude; definitely avoid violet tones
Medium Skin: few freckles, eyes green/brown/gray
  • Cool: Anything tending towards violet, purple, aubergine
  • Warm: Strong and warm orange, red, coral; you should avoid grayish-purple mauve tones
Dark Skin: no freckles, dark brown eyes, hardly visible sunburn
  • Cool: Tones with a blue undertone
  • Warm: Colors with a yellow undertone
You can determine your skin type by, for example, looking at the veins on your wrists. If they shimmer more blue/purple, you have a cool undertone. If they appear green, it's more warm. You can also ask yourself whether gold or silver jewelry suits you better. The former again suggests a warm type, the latter a cool type. If you feel that both suit you, you probably have a neutral skin tone. Then you can confidently let your creativity run wild.

The right lipstick for your hair color

Of course, you can simply apply lipstick based on your skin type. But your hair color also contributes to the overall look. Therefore, the following applies:
  • Blonde: Peach, light pink, soft pastel colors
  • Red: Beige, chestnut, nude, darker orange tones
  • Brown: versatile – brown, red, violet, vibrant neon colors
  • Black: rich red, strong pink, dark aubergine

The best lip care

Preparation is the alpha and omega when it comes to applying lipstick. Just like with your foundation, the base needs to be right here too. It's best to dedicate yourself to this area in your daily routine. The best lip care consists of several steps:
  1. If you have dry lips, we recommend exfoliating them with a lip scrub. You can do this once or twice a week. Gently massage the product in with circular motions to remove dead skin cells from your lips. Then rinse it off with warm water or remove it with a soft, damp cloth.
  2. Use lip balm daily. Apply the balm generously, especially after eating, drinking, or wiping your mouth.
  3. You can also use a lip mask once or twice a week. Leave it on according to the instructions. We prefer overnight products.
In addition to good lip care, it is of course also important to drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. We also advise you to use only products with natural ingredients. As you can learn in our blog post on Korean cosmetics, it is fortunately known for this.

Applying lipstick: the step-by-step guide

Practice makes perfect. This motto applies not only when you try to apply your lipstick, but to all cosmetics. Because the first eyeliner we ever drew certainly wasn't perfect either. So, be patient and try the following instructions.

The base: applying lipliner

Instead of starting right away, the first step is: applying lipliner. This ensures that the actual product later doesn't bleed beyond the lip lines. Here you can decide whether you want to use a transparent variant or one in the same or a slightly darker color than your lipstick. Start with the lipliner in the center of your upper lip and draw the contour from there on both sides to the outer edge. Repeat the same on the bottom. Our tip: Take a look at the different trends for this. This way you can also make your lips look bigger or smaller.

The Main Event: Applying Lipstick

So now we come to the actual question: How do you apply lipstick correctly? It's actually not that difficult. You proceed exactly as with lipliner. Try not to paint beyond its contours.
  1. If you want to work as evenly as possible, it's best to use a brush.
  2. Small smudges can be corrected with a cotton swab and makeup remover.
  3. When you're finished, gently press your made-up lips together on a tissue. This way you prevent the product from getting on your teeth or leaving marks on glasses.

Tips & Tricks for the perfect result

So that you are truly satisfied with your lip look at the end, we have a few final tricks for you. But even here, the rule is: in the world of make-up, there are countless such tips. So feel free to experiment. However, we like the following best:
  • For the color to last as long as possible, you can apply several layers of lipstick. Work the bottom layers in thoroughly with your finger. For the final layer, proceed as described above.
  • Alternatively, you can also apply concealer as a base for more hold.
  • If you have smaller lips or simply want a wow effect, you can not only visually enlarge your mouth with the contours, but also apply highlighter centrally on the lower lip.
  • For perfect make-up, the focus should either be on the mouth or the eyes. So, when applying make-up to the other area, be a little more subtle.

A little excursion – Lipstick trends from Korea

We love Korean cosmetics – and not just because of their great skincare products. The make-up often differs from Western styles. A lipstick trend that has now reached us are so-called Lip Tints. But what exactly are they?

Unlike very intense, traditional colors, these are products with a rather subtle finish. Their application is also very simple and they don't need to be reapplied as often, because they lightly stain the lips instead of just sitting on top as a layer. This allows you to create beautiful color gradients. Here's how:
  1. As described above, prepare well with skincare products.
  2. Apply a thin layer of the Korean lipstick. This time, start in the center and work your way outwards. You don't need a lipliner.
  3. Quickly blend everything with your finger or a brush.
  4. Apply additional layers for more intensity.
  5. Lip Tints have a rather matte finish. So, if necessary, apply a gloss for extra moisture and shine at the end.
The biggest advantage: The product dries very quickly, which means it lasts a long time and leaves no traces. However, this also means that you can't wipe it off as easily. Instead, you'll need to use a cleansing oil and gently massage it into your lips. We wish you a lot of fun trying it out!
