Caring for your eyes is important. You've probably already noticed that the skin there is particularly sensitive. It's no coincidence that the first wrinkles usually appear here. But dark shadows after too little sleep or bags under the eyes are also a sign that we should take intensive care of this area. So if you want to get important information on this topic, read on here!

Before eye care: What characterizes this skin area?

When we write about the skin around the eyes in the following, we are referring to the epidermis around the actual eyeball. You probably know this particularly thin area better as the upper or lower eyelid. It consists mainly of glands, muscles and connective tissue and looks like a large fold. When closed, it protects the organ of sight from dirt and other dangers. In addition, the eyelids serve to keep the cornea and conjunctiva moist.

The upper eyelid is located approximately 1 to 2 millimeters above the upper corneal margin. It is movable with a muscle and protects the eye, for example, from sweat flowing from the forehead by mechanically closing. The lower eyelid, in turn, covers one millimeter of the lower corneal margin. The space between them is called the palpebral fissure. The skin that connects to the lower eyelid is actually thinner than anywhere else on our body. And yet it has to withstand a lot: UV rays, facial expressions such as laughing or crying, and even stress. In addition, it loses elasticity and tension with age. This is why the first wrinkles and other signs of aging appear here. To prevent this, it's time to rethink eye care – especially in the lower area up to the cheeks.

Eye care selection: What to look out for

We have mentioned it several times already: with the particularly thin skin under the eyes, you need to exercise caution. That's why we'll now give you some tips on what ingredients should preferably not be included and which ones are welcome.

What you can do without

The skin around the eyes consists of relatively few sebaceous and sweat glands. That's why it's important that cosmetic products don't contain overly aggressive substances in the ingredient list. The following can unnecessarily irritate this sensitive area and lead to irritation:
  • artificial fragrances
  • dyes
  • incompatible preservatives and solvents such as formaldehyde
  • aromatic oils
  • sensitizing plant extracts

What products for eye care may contain

Especially when it comes to eye care, moisture is essential. This comes in the form of glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Collagen also helps plump up this region. Is that your goal? Then try the Benton Fermentation Eye Cream. It makes the skin plumper, reducing dark circles. Nevertheless, we must also point out here that dark circles are mostly hereditary and therefore cannot be completely removed. Want more facts about skincare? Then read our articles: Expression lines are usually also caused by a lack of moisture and low skin elasticity. In addition to the substances already mentioned, fat-containing substances called lipids can help here. For particularly dry areas, we recommend a product enriched with, for example, vitamin E or panthenol. If you already have a few more wrinkles visible, you can look for a cream that contains Vitamin C and A. These strengthen the collagen structure around your eyes. The iUnik Propolis Vitamin Eye Cream, for example, contains this valuable composition.

Are you looking for more products based on highly effective and natural ingredients? Then you should take a look at our online shop. Because eye care is an integral part of Korean cosmetics. As always, our brands rely on a few, but particularly useful ingredients. These can minimize wrinkles and also have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects. They can also rejuvenate and destroy free radicals. All properties that are beneficial for the area under your eyes.

Creams, serums or masks - when do you apply what?

With the abundance of products for proper eye care, it can sometimes get quite complex. Every manufacturer entices with a variety of benefits. To help you not get lost in this jungle of information, we have compiled a small table of options that are tailored to this sensitive area. By the way: You can also make masks yourself!
What? Features When?
Creams
  • do not contain irritating oils

  • can help prevent premature skin aging
  • daily
  • in the morning after day cream, before leaving the house

Optimal application: How to care for your eyes

The best eye care begins with facial cleansing. For example, if you regularly wear makeup and mascara, you should of course remove your makeup at the end of the day. For the delicate skin around the eyes, we recommend rather mild products, such as an oil cleanser, which gently removes the coarsest dirt first.

Following the principles of Korean Skin Care Routine, a water-based cleanse follows. This way, you truly remove all traces of the day. Always be sure to use slow and gentle movements. If you rub too vigorously, your skin can become irritated. Speaking of irritation: if cosmetics come into contact with the retina, this can have unpleasant consequences. Therefore, it's best to always work carefully from the inside out. Now you can move on to the actual eye care. Use the products sparingly – one pump in the morning and evening is usually completely sufficient. We also recommend gently patting the product in. For this, it's best to use your ring finger, as this exerts the least pressure on the area. This movement also avoids rubbing, which can lead to irritation. Then let it absorb for at least 1 to 2 minutes.

Eye care in everyday life: What else can you do without creams?

But what can you do if, despite extensive eye care, the desired result is still not achieved? We have a few more tips that you can easily implement in your daily life, aside from cosmetic products. In many cases, these can also minimize dark shadows and other issues.
  • Sufficient sleep: A regular and adjusted sleep rhythm is especially important (7 to 9 hours are recommended).
  • Adequate hydration: Since this is particularly thin skin, it must be properly hydrated. You should drink at least 1.5 to 2 liters of fluid daily.
  • Exercise: The promoted blood circulation supplies even the smallest vessels with oxygen, so that everything around the eyes looks radiant.
  • Balanced diet: To prevent deficiency symptoms that can manifest in the skin under the eyes, you should also pay attention to the foods you eat.
  • Cooling: If the skin around your eyes is swollen, chilled teaspoons placed on your closed eyelids can help, for example.
  • Massage: A light massage can work wonders for slightly swollen eyes. However, use your pinky or ring fingers, as they apply less pressure than the others.
If you follow our tips, you'll likely notice an improvement quickly. By the way: Many people think that only the area under the eyes should be creamed for this type of care. But we want to debunk that myth. Because the upper eyelid also can benefit from more moisture. Are you still looking for the right product for it?
